Program Prerequisites

  • The desire to deepen your knowledge of and love for yoga.

Examine the art and science of yoga through a dynamic and integrated approach that supports all learning styles. This Yoga Alliance teacher certification and affiliate program with international teacher Shiva Rea, will empower you to embody the full spectrum of living yoga. Understand yoga history & philosophy, discuss the ethics of teaching and business of yoga. explore the Ayurvedic traditions of yoga while learning the anatomy & physiology of the human body, teaching methodologies, and Wave Sequencing (as developed by Shiva Rea). This foundational teacher training program is appropriate for those looking to deepen their practice as well as committed yoga practitioners interested in becoming teachers.

Yoga Alliance Teacher Certification Program Overview (200-hour)

Embodying the Flow in Depth

  • Explore the five movements of prana that serve as the underlying flow of yoga

  • Cultivating the flow of prana through asana, pranayama, drishti, and the use of the bandhas.

  • Principles and practice of creative and effective sequencing, (beginner and intermediate flows).

  • Ritual arc of class and structure: opening, namaskar, waves, peak poses, counter-poses and closing.

  • Teaching methodologies and integration of the bandhas, pranayama, and meditation.
    Navigating flow-movement meditations, development of observation skills, technique for hands-on adjustments, use of props, use of verbal cues, and other tools.

  • Introduction to mandala of asanas, family of asanas, and key actions of asanas.

  • Learn Surya Namaskar, Chandra Namaskar, Classical Namaskar, and four Dancing Warrior Sequences to enhance your self-practice and teach to others.

  • Understand, apply and teach sequencing principles: vinyasa krama, wave sequencing and the 3-part vinyasa method.

  • Learn to create vinyasa combinations for both beginner, intermediate, and mixed-level students that are effective, creative, safe, and fun.

  • Understand how self-practice and teaching can serve the flow of daily life - living sadhana.

  • Apply Shiva's 3-part vinyasa methodology to standing poses, backbends, arm balances, core abdominals, forward bends, hip openers, twists and inversions.

  • Practice teaching and teaching labs.

 

Energetic Alignment/Mandala Of Asana

  • Understand alignment through the movements of prana, lines of energy, and relationship of opposites in the body.

  • Learn and teach 5 primary alignment actions in any pose.

  • Understand the alignment, actions, functions, and somatic qualities of asanas.

  • Overview of mandala of asanas with key actions.

  • Overview of body vinyasas, arm variations, and shoulder opening.

  • Learn the art of hands on enhancements

  • Energetic alignment, vinyasa krama and hands-on assists for the core family of asanas

  • Explore ways to design the sutra or theme of the class through Shiva's Wave Theory of creative and effective sequencing.

  • Develop an understanding of how to use vinyasa Krama as an approach to sequencing, enabling students of all levels to express their fullest variation of any asana.
     

Pathways of Flow

  • Explore the operating systems of the body.
    Identify anatomical landmarks, muscle groups, holding patterns, and blockages relevant to yoga asanas.

  • Learn modifications for common injuries and conditions.

  • Focus on vinyasa sequences to liberate the neck, shoulders, spine, chest, lower back, psoas, hips, quads, hamstrings and feet.

  • Experience creativity and responsiveness through palpation of the muscles.

  • Learn and experience body structure and energetics; alignment and action; intelligence and intuition of the asanas

  • Explore the physical and subtle layers of body: koshas, chakras, nadis.

  • Use of text, DVD and palpation to facilitate learning.

 

Yoga Philosophy and Theory

  • Philosophical and historical roots of vinyasa yoga.
    Discussion, application, and response to classical yogic texts including the Bhagavad-Gita, Radiance Sutras, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, and other chosen books from reading list.

  • Learn 108 basic Sanskrit asanas and basic Sanskrit terminology.

  • Chanting and understanding of basic universal and bija (seed) mantras.


Processing Yoga

  • Explore the manifestations of samskaras in the body

  • Develop awareness of teaching with effective boundaries

  • Learn tools for safely and compassionately holding space for emotional students

  • Develop and practice skills of Mindfulness and Active Listening

  • Discussion of the ethics of Yoga
     

Business Development

  • The Business of Yoga: Taught by Joan Dwyer
     

Program Requirements for Certification

  • Attend all weekend modules in addition to 25 classes with Coral or an approved teacher.
    (Please note, additional classes are not included in cost of program).

  • Complete the following: 3 Living Sadhana Cycles, Embodiment Project, Sacred Reading List and Book Reports, Final Exam (written and practical).
